type='text'>The Marketing of Madness: The Truth About Psychotropic Drugs

For those being treated for mental health issues, it is vital to be an informed consumer of treatment options. In light of this fact, I suggest that you consider the notion that according to a 2001 research study, psychotherapy is generally considered a complement to pharmacological interventions in the treatment of most mental illness. However, if the illness is an acute episode, psychotherapy approaches, like Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), have demonstrated their efficacy as primary treatments. More recent research has demonstrated that a form of psychotherapy was superior to control conditions in the amelioration of both Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms and depression. Upon termination of therapy, the psychotherapy group using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) continued to improve while the fluoxetine (Prozac) participants again became symptomatic.

The following is a controversial 2010 documentary produced by the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), a nonprofit mental health watchdog group. The CCHR was established in 1969 by the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Church of Scientology and psychiatrist Thomas Szasz. Although this film appears to make some questionable and sensational claims, much of its information does appear to be substantiated within independent, reputable sources. If you choose to watch this documentary, please do so with an open mindedness. Always consult with your treating physician before making any changes to your mental health therapies.

The Marketing of Madness:

The Truth About Psychotropic Drugs

Video hosted by www.youtube.com.

Solutions To Help Keep Your 2012 Resolutions!

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), the most popular New Year's resolutions are losing weight, quitting smoking, and exercising more regularly. Unfortunately, almost sixty percent of those who make resolutions give up, within the first six months. Nevertheless, chances are that if you do make a resolution, you will be ten times more likely to prevail over those without the resolve.

Our feelings actually dictate our actions. In that regard, if you are like most people (including myself), you probably have brand name toothpaste in your bathroom. Although we both intellectually know that generic toothpaste is basically the same as (and often less expensive than) the brand name, we pay more for the brand name, because we feel that it will provide us with "fresher breath and whiter teeth."

Advertisers tend to trick our emotional selves into feeling good about their product over their competitor's or generic, often causing us to change our behavior to spend more for their product. Using this same basic "Psych 101" principle to one's advantage, can help empower oneself to create positive change, especially as it applies to resolutions.

To succeed with your resolutions, therefore, it is vital to pair enough emotional pain to the old behaviors, and enough emotional pleasure with the new behaviors. A smoker, for example, might imagine how good it will feel to breathe easier as well as to have more energy, freedom and pride in the accomplishment..

Having a plan is also key to any behavioral change. Fortunately, the Internet affords an amazing array of self-help tools. My online collection of "Solutions to your 2012 Resolutions" offers free software and meditation downloads for managing stress; additional APA information on New Year's Resolutions; free ebooks on weight-loss, exercise and smoking cessation; and links to other select online tools for behavioral change.
Sleep

A close friend of mine had been on prescription sleep medication, for years. I helped him to successfully combine the following three, non-pharmacological items for quality sleep, without further need for Ambien. I trust that it can also work for you.

My upcoming dissertation research centers on "audio-visual stimulation." "Light and Sound Machines" utilize the AVS phenomenon, in order to facilitate effortless states of deep relaxation. You can freely try AVS here: http://www.netliberty.net/dreamachine.html
(Ensure that you mark the settings for 4 Hz and White.)

Or, if you like, you can inexpensively purchase a "Light and Sound Machine" here: http://www.elixa.com/mental/Orion.htm

For sleep, I would recommend combining AVS with hypnosis and one of the following supplements:
• L-Tryptophan (Four 500 mg capsules, with your doctor's OK)
• Kava (An alternative to l-tryptophan: four 250 mg capsules of Kava, with your doctor's OK)
• Melatonin (5 - 10mg 30 minutes before bedtime, with your doctor's OK)
• Audio Self-Hypnosis MP3 for Sleep

Sufferers of photosensitive epilepsy should never try AVS.

What is EMDR Therapy?

I first became acquainted with EMDR, when it was featured on a 1994 episode of the ABC television news show, 20/20. During the show, experts discussed the remarkable efficacy of this relatively new (at that time) therapy. Its reliance upon strange eye movements and purported ease of application / time-efficient resolution of disturbing memories heightened my curiosity.

I soon found myself attending the EMDR Institute's Level I and Level II Philadelphia trainings, which were led by Dr. Francine Shapiro, EMDR's originator. I was also fortunate to have been able to read Dr. Shapiro's newly published, first book on EMDR, between my first and second training levels. I continue to use the therapy with most of my clients, in order to assist them with big and small destructive memories. I am also an EMDR seminar speaker for PESI.

EMDR does seem effective with most patients with whom I have worked. I am excited to estimate that about 60% of my patients have found significant, sustained relief; 30% modest relief; and 10% little to no relief with EMDR.

EMDR appears to be a natural way to process information. As humans, we have the unique ability to heal. It is not time that heals wounds. It is what wedo, over time, which helps us heal. Physically, if we cut ourselves we heal. However, sometimes the wound festers, requiring us to do something to assist the healing. Emotionally, we tend to find relief as we gain new perspective on a disturbing memory and think / feel differently about it, over time. Sometimes the disturbing memory may get "stuck" and "fester," wherein the bi-lateral stimulation of the saccadic eye movements of EMDR seem to help to get it unstuck, allowing us to finally make that link between what we "know" to how we "feel," in order to generate emotional relief.

EMDR is not only "eye movements." It is a therapeutic approach that draws upon many various psychological disciplines and relies upon an eight stage protocol. Although the exact mechanism of EMDR is not fully understood, some experts (see Uri Bergmann's "Speculations on the neurobiology of EMDR," as presented at the 1996 Harvard University-Cambridge Hospital EMDR symposium, which I retrieved on October 28, 2008 from the Florida State University Web site: http://www.fsu.edu/~trauma/art1v4i1.html) believe that it may be related to stimulation of the amygdala to produce natural opiates.

Other experts believe that EMDR may involve some other mechanism associated with the memory processing of REM sleep. Still others believe that it has something to do with distraction. Whatever the mechanism of action, EMDR appears to be a very real phenomenon and remarkable therapy for helping patients to expedite the resolution of their disturbing memories.

When Life Becomes Too Heavy: A Patient's Reflections on Depression[Reprinted with permission.]

I was shocked to find out that I suffered from depression most of my life. I knew that my experience of abuse was unique but the struggle I have with daily thought, I thought were the normal, private wars everyone was challenged with. I was just not as adept at managing them as everyone else was. After all, I grew up to believe that not much of what I am is worth anything, so why should this trait be any different. I was just one person trying to be the best I could be, with what little I was.

When my first psychologist sent me for evaluation to a psychiatrist, I was aghast at his initial diagnosis. Depression was something other people experienced. I suffered from nightmares and disruptive thoughts of what my father did. I struggled with the things he lead me to believe about myself, those life lessons that are supposed to build your child up to face the world, not the ones that tore me down in a tenacious effort to manipulate me back into his abusive desires. I did not see myself as a victim or someone who suffered with depression. What I saw was a child who told her father no and was now being punished for it.

I believed everything that came to me after that point was the life I deserved. Life was my punishment. Any wrong doing from others, or misfortunes that happened upon me, were a direct result of my disobedience.

I did not understand them to be part of the vicious nature of depression.

Silencing thoughts of a picturesque life was paramount to my survival. Dwelling on what I couldn’t have only made my existence that much harder to bear. I knew that AI could not change the Hand of God by committing suicide (as I have learned, those thoughts lived within another Ego State). I knew that I was to live as I was until the day God decided. The only perceived control I had was that of my thoughts and not allowing them to go to “the happy place”, made the incarceration tolerable until death would bring me freedom.

Life was punishment. Death my freedom. Depression a somewhat manageable disease of the mind. The three didn’t add up.

It wasn’t until the psychiatrist started asking specific question about my past, that I began to see the patterns of my life fitting into the symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder. Although I still believed I had no control over how the world interacted with me (I’m still not so sure about it). I just now knew and understood that I had been suffering from depression for many years without having put a label on it.

When a diagnosis becomes personal, it changes meaning. It did not change the core belief that I was being punished but it did offer the chance of some relief while I remained alive. It at least gives me something to work with. It game me some dreaded hope that life would be less of a burden. Like the alcoholic seeking relief, if I could get through y days a little easier by taking a pill, I didn’t think God would mind so much.

I’ve come to understand the cycle of depression very well. It doesn’t make it easier (somewhere within, we still believe we are being punished) but I understand it better. Learning the cyclic changes has helped me to mostly better cope with existence. In fact, some of the Ego States even understand depression to be just what it is and not punishment, although I am not one of them.

My days are filled with murky sadness. Energy is sapped from every parcel of my body like water from a desert. They are days of heavy air making it difficult to take a breath. Each activity is a calculated event, colossal in achievement, yet small in size. Getting up from where I breathe to get a drink. Grasping the remote control to change the channel. Finding words to speak. I thought I was a procrastinator but it turns out differently.

Power of Self-Talk

Our thoughts affect our feelings. Our feelings affect our actions. Our consistent actions affect our future. Nonetheless, most of the time, the majority of us are unaware of exactly what we our inner voice is telling us, at any given moment. And, most of our self-talk is NOT 100% true. Understanding the nature of our self-talk is an invaluable first step toward real, empowered change.

I highly recommend Dr. Harriet Braiker’s 1989 “Power of Self-Talk” article, which appeared in Psychology Today magazine. I actually share it with each of my new patients. It is a concise overview of an aspect of a commonly used approach in counseling, namely "Cognitive Behavioral Therapy." The early beginnings of CBT was independently developed by renowned American psychologist, Dr. Albert Ellis and psychiatrist Dr. Aaron T. Beck. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy was also popularized by Dr. David Burns' 1980 book, Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy.

Dr. Braiker's article is hosted as a .doc file by UCLA IMDB.com, Michael Moore's controversial "Sicko" is a documentary comparing the highly profitable American health care industry to other nations, and HMO horror stories. According to Wikipedia.org, "Sicko" received a standing ovation, during its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award for Documentary Feature. Sicko was further commended in the Australian Film Critics Association 2007 Film Award for Best Documentary. "Sicko" was released and distributed by The Weinstein Company.
According the the National Coalition on Health Care, nearly 46 million Americans, or 18 percent of the population under the age of 65, were without health insurance in 2007. Despite the fact that 80% of Americans do have healthcare insurance, "Sicko" claims that many of those Americans do not realize that they actually have costly, inadequate coverage. With all of the recent increase in emphasis upon national healthcare reform, I would also like to offer the following sobering reminders. I agree with my state representative Phyllis Mundy's (D - PA) statement that "free market principles and competition are not more important than the people's access to affordable health insurance." According to the American Psychological Association's Dr. Lynn Bufka, "Physical and mental health are inextricably linked, as in the case with heart health and stress." Harvard Medical School's Dr. Herbert Benson is also renowned for having observed that "Sixty to ninety percent of visits to physicians are for conditions related to stress."

<<< Well before Seligman's observation, however, the Amish seem to have understood the importance of this emphasis. The Amish lifestyle represents a subculture within American society that is the antithesis of capitalism. Amazingly, it is suggested that their departure from Americana actually contributes to their overall level of happiness. In recent years, author Jonah Lehrer has highlighted the fact that the Amish’s rates of depression are more than ten fold lower than the rest of the American population.
Image hosted by northwesternflipside.com.

The Amish appear to place more emphasis upon the depth, quality and nature of their relationships. Within the Amish community, for example, if a neighbor’s roof is damaged in a storm, the community is likely to arrive the next day to volunteer its assistance with the repairs. Sadly, within American society, many people do not even know their neighbors. Perhaps a simple restructuring of priorities can help Americans to find their happiness within a distressed economy.

Hypnosis for Smoking Cessation 48% Effective?

Within a 2006 study (Jorenby et al., 2006) on the treatment of nicotine dependence demonstrated that although its initial efficacy is 44 percent at twelve weeks, varenicline (Chantix) was only 22.5 percent effective after nine months. Elkins and Rajab (2004) demonstrated a 48 percent quit-rate upon a twelve month follow-up with participants within their hypnosis for smoking cessation study. According to New Scientist (1992), “hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking." Its quote was based upon a study cited within the Journal of Applied Psychology, earlier that same year. These findings appear to hold true, even within today's healthcare environment that seemingly demonstrates an overemphasis upon pharmacological approaches.

If you or someone you know wants to quit smoking, I recommend my FREE resources at http://www.quitforfree.com/.

References:
Elkins, G. According to Alcoholics Anonymous, "Unless I accept life on life’s terms, I cannot be happy. I need to concentrate not so much on what needs to be changed in the world as on what needs to be changed in me and in my attitudes."

Consider for a moment the childhood brainteaser of the “Chinese finger trap.” This interwoven tube of heavy paper locks its user’s fingers in place when one finger from each hand is inserted into each end of the channel. Subsequent attempts to remove one’s fingers prove fruitless.

The secret to freeing oneself from the Chinese finger trap is to accept that one is powerless over it. Although this mindset may initially seem self-defeating, it is actually a lesson in “living life on life’s terms.” Controlling the Chinese finger trap is not the goal. As one accepts the powerlessness, one can finally focus upon the true goal of freedom. This renewed focus allows one to let things happen and do things consistent with freedom, in order to solve the dilemma. Instead of simultaneously pulling one’s fingers in opposite directions, which creates more of a stuck sensation, one can push one finger into the trap, which actually helps to loosen its grip.

I often use this above analogy within my private-practice, in order to illustrate to my clients the power of acceptance in dealing with their presenting concerns. In real life, it tends to be easier to accept the unacceptable, if one can first find something within the situation about which to be grateful. Therefore, gratitude helps to lead to acceptance. Acceptance can help to lead to forgiveness. Forgiveness can help to lead to the quintessential experience of love.

In light of the above, consider the following example. A teenager totals his new car. He is angry with himself for not having made a complete stop at the stop sign. He struggles with guilt and upset for several weeks, because he does not accept the fact that he acted so foolishly. Eventually, he begins to appreciate the fact that nobody was injured and his insurance has paid for his automobile replacement. Now, he can begin to accept the fact that accidents happen and he can learn from the experience. Finally, he can begin to forgive himself and feel appropriate self-love, despite his human condition.

Is Positive Psychology the Basis of the Law of Attraction?

The term "positive psychology" first appeared in the last chapter of Dr. Abraham Maslow's 1954 book Motivation and Personality, the title of which was, "Toward a Positive Psychology." In this chapter, Maslow maintains that “psychology itself does not have an accurate understanding of human potential, and that the field tends not to raise the proverbial bar high enough with respect to maximum attainment."

Whereas the contemporary disease model of psychology is often considered overly preoccupied with pathology, positive psychology incorporates its key elements of humanism, by supporting the notion that people are predisposed to seek ongoing growth and higher improvement.

More recently, Drs. Martin Seligman and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi define positive psychology as the study of how human beings excel in the face of hardship. Seligman characterizes the six human virtues of wisdom and knowledge, courage, love and humanity, justice, temperance, and spirituality and transcendence. He claims to have arrived at this list of basic virtues, by distilling it from a cross-section of theological, sociological, and philosophical teachings from across the centuries of recorded civilized human history.

I have come to understand modern "positive psychology" as akin to a “neo-humanistic” approach to the understanding of human behavior. The early influences of humanism can also be seen within popularized versions of its ideology as found in the mid-20th century writings of its time, evidenced by Robert Collier's 1926 book, "The Secret of the Ages" and Napoleon Hill's 1937 book, "Think and Grow Rich." These best-selling books expounded upon the notion that positive ideas and thoughts have healthy transformative power.

Modern examples of these same philosophical influences can even be seen within the popularized writings of Norman Vincent Peale's 1952 "The Power of Positive Thinking," Wayne Dyer's 2004"The Power of Intention," and Rhonda Byrne's 2006 book, "The Secret."

The basic tenant within these modern writings seems to reflect aspects of many of the concepts related to positive psychology, partly suggesting that the things upon which we focus tend to become our reality, as we allow things to happen and do things, consistent with this structured focus, in order to manifest our desires. I do believe that one of the most vital benefits of positive psychology is its ability to offer its heartfelt reminder of the true nature of limitless possibilities and the power of human spirit and perseverance.

A Brief Collection of Some Inspirational Images & Quotes on Our Human Character Strengths

ASK A QUESTION!

Until now, only active clients could email me for personalized, self-help recommendations.

For a limited time ANYONE can email me for the same. He or she says, "No." As an adult, you know that if this scenario had happened in your life, it happened because 6 year-olds are basically selfish and do not know how to share. As a 6 year-old, however, you would not have known that that was the real reason. As a way of making sense of the senseless, you might have adopted a negative belief about yourself, as it related to the situation. In other words, you may have suggested to yourself that "I am not good enough." Or, "I am not likeable."

This interpretation may have meant little, except when later, a parent says, "No" and a teacher says, "No." Now, one may begin to use this random life experience, in order to support this erroneous set of beliefs that "I am not good enough" or "I am not likeable."

Within adolescence, a teacher may say, "No" or a date may say, "No." Now, as one enters early adulthood, one may not simply think these things to be true, but one may begin to feel them to be true. The beliefs that we feel to be true tend to guide our actions. If we feel it to be true that "I am not worthy" and "I am not likeable," we are probably not heading in a direction that is consistent with our desires.

The things that we feel to be true tend to guide our actions, as we allow things to happen and do things, consistent with the beliefs. Although these beliefs seem to offer an explanation, however, their assertions are not true. Yet, it may be initially difficult to believe otherwise, since these initial beliefs seem to offer a plausible explanation.

The truth, based upon the wealth of one's other life experiences, however, insists that despite what happened, "I am worthy" and "I am likeable." In great part, therapy is a way to resolve disturbing memories, in order to release the erroneous beliefs. As a result, one is finally able to begin to embrace the truth that "I am worthy" and "I am likeable." These new, healthier perspectives begin to guide one into the more positive direction of one's intentions.

"You have been taught
that there is something wrong with you
and that you are imperfect,
but there isn't and you're not."
--Cheri Huber

Hypnosis as the New OTC?

Although it is vital to follow the treatment advice of one's physician, it never ceases to amaze me as to the degree to which American mindset seems indoctrinated by the notion that one must generally take a prescription or OTC pill, in order to feel better. Recent news headlines even reaffirmed this notion, by suggesting that during these financially challenging times, some people are even beginning to favor less expensive OTC herbal alternatives to their prescription medications for sleep.

Nonetheless, I believe that effective non-pill alternatives are often not given the respect that they deserve. Even if one's doctor concurs with its safety and efficacy, I doubt that non-pill remedies are typically considered. I am primarily referring to the well-researched intervention of clinical hypnosis. Unfortunately, its misconceptions and stigmas tend to relegate hypnosis to an often overlooked option.

As a psychologist, I do understand that clinical hypnosis is actually considered one of the most effective ways to address a wide variety of concerns, including stress management, many forms of pain management, sleeplessness, and smoking cessation. Hypnosis is a phenomenon that is basically an exercise in deep meditation. Once in a deeply relaxed state, one's mind develops a natural, heightened focus. It is this fixed concentration that affords one the unique ability to benefit from "post-hypnotic suggestions." These suggestions are analogous to a seed being planted within one's subconscious mind. Assuming the suggestions are consistent with desired treatment goals, the hypnotized person is likely to experience a positive benefit from the intervention.

Nowadays, instead of "Over-The-Counter," when indicated, many could likely benefit from professional self-hypnosis downloaded for free, "Over-The-Internet." Beforehand, it is important to ensure that one's physician approves the switch and has determined that the treated symptoms are not signs of more serious medical conditions.

ONLY eBook Version (no longer FREE) of Allen Carr's Best-Selling Self-Help Book!

In order to continue to make Allen Carr's FREE eBooks available, I had to be in contact with both the Allen Carr Foundation (England) and the attorneys for Wowio.com (USA). In 2008, I was actually notified by the Allen Carr Foundation with respect to possible copyright infringement. After a brief hiatus (Until the matter was resolved, the Allen Carr eBooks were temporarily removed from the Wowio site.) the Carr books returned. Wowio is an advertiser supported site, wherein today it remains the only source where readers can legally access high-quality copyrighted eBooks from leading publishers for free. Within America, cigarettes are responsible for one in five deaths and smoking-related healthcare costs are tens of billions of dollars. The insinuation is that the president-elect should set a healthy example by being smoke-free.

Although Senator Obama has apparently tried nicotine gum as an aide to quitting smoking, I highly doubt that he has tried clinical hypnosis. Unfortunately, the misconceptions and stigma associated with hypnosis relegate it to an often overlooked treatment option.

As a psychologist, I do understand that clinical hypnosis is actually considered one of the most effective ways to quit smoking. Despite this fact, I could find no government websites that offer free self-hypnosis audio downloads for smoking cessation. Consider the fact that if there was an inexpensive medication that was well-tolerated and potentially curative for a widespread and serious medical condition, pandemonium would ensue, if it were not enthusiastically endorsed and freely made available.

Until similar official endorsement for clinical hypnosis occurs, I encourage smokers to visit QuitForFree.com for my free hypnosis for smoking cessation instant audio download, discount coupons for other quit smoking aides, and free e-book access to best-selling quit smoking publications.

Managing Stress Without Wearing Rose Colored Glasses!

Throughout the years of my career as a psychologist, I have come to understand fear to be a negative emotion from which most other negative emotions originate. Fear is essentially anxiety. Fear often underlies anger, similar to the proverbial cat with its back up against the wall. The cat lashes out in anger, because it is afraid of being attacked. Anger turned inward is often referred to as depression. And, when one feels guilty, it is typically an indication that one is either afraid of having done something wrong or is afraid of being punished. Managing fears, therefore, can also help to ease a variety of negative emotions.

Nonetheless, fear can be legitimate reaction to the situation. It is important to distinguish illegitimate and legitimate fears. The physiological and emotional reaction to real danger (i.e. - the "fight or flight response') helps one to protect oneself. The rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, and muscle tension assists in allowing oxygen and nutrients to prepare the body for protective fighting or fleeing. Overactive fear can be an interfering and potentially unhealthy reaction to a perceived danger that is not real.

In situations that do not merit the intensity of the debilitating fear reaction, the level of the fear could also originate from a disturbing memory that has been resurrected by the current environment. The person may be reacting more to the anxiety surrounding the upsetting memory than the current situation. Illegitimate fear could stem from a misperception of the current situation. Illegitimate fear can also originate from a biochemical imbalance, wherein psychotropic medication could be a corrective intervention.

Fear and anxiety can be exacerbated by the words we use. "Should", "Have to", and "Must" are particular culprits. For example, if someone is running late for an important meeting, he or she may complicate the tardiness by suggesting that "I have to get there on time." The "have to" insinuates that if he or she is late that it would be "terrible." The word terrible is emotionally analogous to threat of nuclear warfare.

Running late for a meeting is not terrible. Emotionally, one does not necessarily know the difference between truth and exaggeration. If the perception is terror, the reaction is fear. Questioning self-talk, therefore, is vital since thoughts affect how one feels, while feelings affect how one acts. In this example, the tardy person can remind his or her self that it is his or her choice to arrive on time. It is important to affirm the fact that if the meeting starts late, he or she would actually be early. Even if he or she were late, it would be alright, since it is only a choice to arrive on-time. Although the choice is for responsible reasons, it still remains a choice. As the feelings associated with this new perspective resonate, the effect is a calmer disposition that affords this person to depart sooner, without literally tripping over his or her feet.

Some of my patients have questioned me, regarding how feelings (and not thoughts) primarily dictate one's actions and behaviors. In this regard, I like to share the following analogy. Most people probably have brand name toothpaste or soap in their bathroom. Although they intellectually know that generic toothpaste is basically the same as (and less expensive than) brand name, they pay more for the brand name, because they feel that it will provide them with "fresher breath and whiter teeth." The behavior, within this example, is to pay more for something that is basically the same as the cheaper brand. In essence, feelings trumped thought.

In essence, thoughts affect feelings. Feelings affect behavior. Behavior affects one's future experiences. Understanding the interplay between one's thoughts and feelings can afford one the opportunity to better manage one's feelings, behaviors and resultant experiences. No one is suggesting to look at oneself, others, and the world with "rose colored glasses." It is suggested that one attempt to look at oneself, others, and the world in the most balanced, positive, and accurate manner possible.

Advanced WindowsCare Personal 3.0
Speed-up your computer! Higher education, family responsibilities, child care, career, and improved capacity for intimacy are just some of the worthy pursuits that this lifestyle helps to foster. The obvious benefit of the additional income cannot be understated, especially within a society that places increased demands upon "keeping up with the Joneses."

The added stress, however, of organizing demanding schedules and child care can seem daunting. The ease with which one can "lose one's self" is also a potentially dangerous "workaholism" type of escapism. The insidious and consistent detachment of one's feelings through this type of escapism can dull valuable feelings, which can further and ultimately alienate the over-achiever from him or herself and others, leading to confusion, poor direction, and despair.

Balance is crucial, in order for the dual-career relationship to experience long-term success. Achieving a balance between family, work, and educational responsibilities is now becoming less of an ideal and more of a reality, for example, given the innovative learning opportunities that accredited online programs now provide. "Thinking outside the box" in similar, non-traditional ways is vital, in order to strike a healthy balance and mange stress within this multifaceted lifestyle.

Especially within a dual-career relationship, healthy choices, are the keys to striking a balance between one's physical, intellectual, emotional, interpersonal, and spiritual needs.
Numerous online self-help, meditative materials also exist that can afford helpful ways to manage stress and improve sleep. Timeless advise, like getting plenty of sleep, exercise, eating properly, and taking time to de-stress is even more important today than ever before.

Self-Esteem and the "Binocular Trick"

People naturally want their thoughts, feelings, and experiences to be consistent. If someone interviews for a job, for example, that pays them more than they thought that they would ever earn (even though they are capable of and deserving of the job), their thought that they are incapable is inconsistent with their experience of being offered the interview. Ultimately, they will likely feel very nervous about the interview. As a result of this anxiety and worry, they will not likely interview well. Therefore, they will likely be rejected for the job. This rejection can be internalized as "proof" that they are undeserving, thereby added to their lower sense of self and self-esteem.

Immediately after their aforementioned rejection, their initial anxiety will likely ease, because their experience (getting rejected) is now consistent with their untrue thought (that they are not deserving). Nonetheless, they will likely continue to feel inferior and earn less money. The true reality, however, is that they were and are capable. As they understand this truth (no matter the etiology of the original belief) both in how he/she thinks and feels about themself, they will perform much better in the future. This improved performance (based upon this change in perception and healthy understanding) will likely lead to ongoing approval and acceptance. This positive experience will likely lead to an overall improved sense of self, self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-image.

Another common "cognitive distortion," as described by Burns, that influences self-esteem is known as the "binocular trick." If one has ever looked into a pair of binoculars the wrong way, everything looks far away. In essence, people sometimes use this phenomenon upon themselves, while comparing themselves with others. One might look at one's own accomplishments as if through the wrong end of a pair of binoculars. Conversely, one may examine another's accomplishments as if through the right way through the same binoculars. When looking at one's shortcomings, there may be a tendency to examine these deficits as if looking at them properly though binoculars. On the other hand, others' shortcomings are examined in the opposite way.

Since most publicly embellish personal strengths, while minimizing weaknesses, the etiology of this discrepancy becomes self-evident. When comparing out, it is ultimately vital to remember that our self-knowledge far exceeds our understanding of others. This imbalanced perspective creates an illusion that can be overcome, therefore, by means of an awareness of the role of the binocular trick and the realization that everyone has his or her own set of shortcomings and strengths.

The "Power of Self-Talk" (DOC file)

I would like to share the following two new additions which have recently been highlighted on my website. The basic tenant is that the things upon which we focus tend to become our reality, as we allow things to happen and do things, consistent with this structured focus, in order to manifest our desires. Furthermore, "The Secret" emphasizes the power inherent within the "Law of Attraction" and "The Power of Intention." Although all the ideas shared within this remarkable program are not necessarily based in science, one can nonetheless benefit from acting "as if" the ideas are all-true, in order to facilitate success. I believe that the true wisdom of "The Secret" is its ability to captivate a world's imagination, by offering its heartfelt reminder of the true nature of limitless possibilities and the power of human perseverance.

Scranton's John Norcross, Ph.D. on CBS News - March 1, 2007

Video hosted by youtube.com.
Image hosted by cbsnews.com.

In my opinion, 19th Century German philosopher, Arthur Schopenhauer, seemed to have summed it best by having declared "All truth passes through three stages. The article highlights the current trend over the decrease in psychotherapy offered, during psychiatric visits. Although it may be true that many insurance companies offer psychiatrists reimbursement incentives to offer more "medication management" than "talk therapy," psychotherapy remains an integral part of mental health treatment.

Within private practice, psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in prescribing psychotropic medication. Psychologists are licensed, non-physician specialists who offer counseling or psychotherapy services. Most insurance reimburses for full 45-50 minute sessions with psychologists. Within a clinical setting, psychologists apply their expertise in a balanced manner, between a directive style and the recognition of the importance of allowing themselves to be more of a facilitator to help their clients help themselves. For most people, this approach allows for accurate assessment of presenting concerns and facilitation of personal growth.

As humans, we do have an innate capacity toward health. Physically, for example, if we cut ourselves, we usually heal. Sometimes, however, if there is an infection, the cut will likely fester, continuing to cause problems, until the wound is cleansed. Therapy can be considered a way to help clean festering, "emotional wounds" that are contributing to present concerns. Although we are a species that is fairly resilient, therapy is a deliberate way, however, to facilitate our resiliency, in order to allow positive change to occur sooner, rather than later.

Talking with an objective other can offer a unique perspective conducive to emotional growth. When attempting to be supportive, unfortunately, family and friends can often make inappropriate comments, like: "Forget it" or "Don't worry about it." Usually that tactic is much easier said than done. Although well-intentioned, these statements tend to serve to further alienate oneself from one's feelings. One's feelings (both pleasant and unpleasant) offer the useful purpose of guiding one in better understanding oneself. It is the misunderstanding or avoidance of feelings that is often a catalyst to undermining our innate process, which helps us to be resilient in the first place.

There is a growing recognition of the fact that "mental health is fundamental to a person's overall health, indispensable to personal well-being and instrumental to leading a balanced and productive life." This awareness likely contributes to the fact that about 15% of our country's population now use some form of mental health services in any given year. Nonetheless, despite effective treatments, according to Dr. Satcher's 1999 Surgeon General's Mental Health report, "Nearly half of all Americans who have a severe mental illness fail to seek treatment". The fact that nearly one in five Americans are affected by a mental disorder, reinforces the understanding that "few Americans are untouched by mental illness", whether directly or indirectly.

Mental illnesses range from clinical anxiety and depression to Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. Anxiety disorders, the most common form of mental illness, affect more than 10% of Americans yearly. Almost 25% of Americans will suffer an anxiety disorder at some point in their lives.

Misunderstandings about therapy have kept many from seeking timely, effective care. Similar early misunderstandings, within the medical field, for example, had also existed within the field's early years. I trust that the continued acceptance and appreciation of the discipline of psychology will dispel any residual misunderstandings about its efficacious use and appropriateness to overall healthcare.

Is Our Society Becoming More Callous?

I am writing in response to the disheartening headline that shocked local and national media observers. A recently released surveillance video depicted a tragic hit-and-run scene, wherein witnesses seemingly ignored the elderly Hartford pedestrian, who lay motionless in the middle of the busy street. The report appears to insinuate that our society has become callous to its brethren. Although I certainly do not condone the onlookers' inaction, I do hope to offer insight into their questionable behavior.

Image hosted by nytimes.com

What happened in Hartford is likely an example of what is termed the "bystander effect." Each witness, perhaps confused and aghast at what they just evidenced, look at the other witnesses to see what they are going to do, assuming that the others will take responsibility. The sum result is total inaction. Ironically, this man likely had a better chance of getting help sooner, if there were only one or two witnesses present. When there exist more than two witnesses, the social phenomenon of "diffusion of responsibility" can bring about the bystander effect.

Understanding the existence of this phenomenon can help future bystanders break free from its effects. Additionally, if one finds oneself in the role of the victim, one should attempt to single out a particular bystander, by pointing to the one witness and requesting their singular assistance. Although the severity of his injuries certainly prevented this victim from making any requests, it is somewhat reassuring that at least some of the witnesses, in this case, did phone 911.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, during which the free National Anxieties Disorders Screening Day is held. Consider what Kim Bassinger, Marc Summers and football great Earl Campbell have in common. They have all suffered from an anxiety disorder, America's most common mental illness. According to the National Institute for Mental Health, nearly a quarter of the American adult population will suffer from an anxiety disorder at some time in their lives.

Unlike normal worries, these individuals can experience a variety of symptoms which can include spontaneous panic attacks, endlessly checking and rechecking their actions, persistent, uncontrollable worry and social anxiety, which interferes with their lives. The symptoms of anxiety disorders are characterized by fear and anxiety that appear for no apparent reason.

Anxiety disorders include Panic Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Social Phobia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Left untreated, these conditions often become accompanied by depression, substance abuse and suicidal thoughts. Although most sufferers never connect with appropriate treatment, effective treatments do exist, which can offer relief within a relatively short period of time.

The first week of every October is designated as Mental Illness Awareness Week, during which the free National Depression Screening Day is held. Consider what Abraham Lincoln, Ernest Hemingway, and Brooke Shields have in common. They have all suffered from clinical depression. Depression and manic-depression strike more than 17 million Americans each year, according to figures from the National Institute of Mental Health. Fewer than half, however, actually seeks treatment, despite the fact that treatment can help 80 - 90 percent of those affected.

Common symptoms of depression include feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, restlessness and irritability, changes in sleep and appetite, loss of energy and thoughts of death or suicide. Manic-depression includes feelings of euphoria or agitation. Clinical depression is more than just the 'blues. It is a real, pervasive condition that even has the potential to be life threatening. A sufferer has no better chance to "just snap out of it" than someone, for example, with a seizure disorder simply controlling their attacks. The screenings initiatives are invaluable opportunities for people, who might otherwise be timid about discussing their concerns or symptoms, to do so without feeling pressured.

Click HERE For Information on a FREE Mental Health Screening!

Click HERE to watch excerpts of the online VIDEO:

"The Pain of Depression - A Journey Through the Darkness"

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) -- Effective For Military's PTSD Symptoms

The Department of Defense now encourages troops to seek psychological counseling, having recently eased its policy on disclosure mandates. I applaud this initiative, especially since about one in eight of our American soldiers are reportedly returning from Iraq, suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. As treatment, the Department of Defense/Department of Veterans Affairs Practice Guidelines have also placed Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) in the highest category, recommended for all trauma populations, at all times.

EMDR is a form of psychotherapy that assists patients in resolving disturbing memories. It is imperative that any lingering misconceptions surrounding its efficacy be dispelled, in order that more soldiers are afforded the opportunity to alleviate their suffering, by applying this remarkable therapeutic approach.

As a Pennsylvania psychologist, I have been using this form of therapy, since 1995. Most of the concerns, about EMDR, seem to have been centered upon the notion that there existed little evidence for its use as one of psychotherapy's "empirically supported treatments." In so much as it is vital that no health care provider do patient harm, my question is to consider the harm that could occur, however, if EMDR is not offered as a timely treatment option.

Throughout the years, it has been my experience that EMDR seems to help patients make a link between what they "know" to what they "feel." This "break-through" is invaluable, especially with the trauma patient who is finally able to resolve their torment. Numerous studies also appear to support this same contention that EMDR offers a protocol and treatment approach that is efficacious, time efficient, and particularly indicated when dealing with patients with trauma-based issues, like many of our young soldiers.

OPEN FORUM

Use this space to create your own topic of discussion!

I find the basic tenant of the "The Secret" quite inspirational, in that the things upon which we focus tend to become our reality, as we allow things to happen and do things, consistent with this structured focus, in order to manifest our desires.

Although all the ideas shared within these programs are not necessarily based in science, I do believe that one can still benefit from acting "as if" the ideas are all-true, in order to facilitate success. Furthermore, I believe that the true wisdom of "The Secret" is its ability to captivate a world's imagination, by offering its heartfelt reminder of the true nature of limitless possibilities and the power of human perseverance.

Click for ebook
The Secret of the Ages
by: Robert Collier
FREE Ebook download of the 1926 book that inspired Rhonda Byrnes.
Image hosted by google.com.
Ebook hosted by tigerseyedowsing.com.

Click for ebook
Think and Grow Rich
by: Napoleon Hill
FREE Ebook download of the 1937 book that inspired Bob Proctor.
Image hosted by google.com. For example, one of the "terms" of life is that we need to breathe air and drink water. One of the other "terms" is that sometimes bad things happen to good people. Nonetheless, we can learn from these experiences. One of the things that we often learn is that we do have choices.

Young circus elephants, for example, have often been trained to keep them from escaping, by tying them to a post, while they are still very young. After countless, fruitless attempts to free themselves, the baby elephants believe that they cannot escape. Eventually, even as strong, adult elephants, they will not attempt to flee. The elephants have leaned to be helpless, despite their new reality.
Not unlike other animals, humans can mistakenly learn to be helpless. Unlike most other animals, however, we have the unique intellectual capacity to understand the nature of our limitations, in order to rise above them.

What we focus upon tends to become our experience. If we believe that we are "bad" and "deserve to be punished," then that becomes our reality. If we understand, however, that we were "victimized," that sometimes bad things do happen to good people, we can learn from our unfortunate experience that we still do have choices, despite our initial feelings of "learned helplessness." We can eventually "accept life on life's terms" that despite what happened, that does not make me who I am. I am a good person who has positive choices and deserves good things. This new, healthier perspective now becomes our reality, as we allow things to happen and to things, consistent with this empowering belief.

Virtual Light and Sound Machine Meditation FREEWARE for Effortless Stress Management

Since 1997, Herbert Benson, of the Harvard Medical School, has reaffirmed that "Sixty to ninety percent of [doctor-patient] visits are prompted by conditions related to stress." Especially in today's world, stress management is truly vital to emotional, relational, and overall physical health. As a psychologist, I understand that most tend to consider meditative exercises as too difficult to learn; and too time consuming to practice.

Although activities like watching television and listening to music can be relaxing, they do not illicit the relaxation response that is most beneficial for managing stress. In order to de-stress, people need to do something that sounds contradictory, namely engage in activity that is not passive. The Surgeon General recommends physical activity for stress management. One can also manage stress by engaging in self-meditations.

De-stressing with...

"Virtual Light & Sound Machine"
Meditation FREEWARE

Even though Light and Sound Machines are effective devices that help to induce healthy meditative states, most also consider them to be too expensive. To sample the positive effects of these devices, "Flasher 1.51" is actually a fully-functional, virtual Light & Sound Machine freeware program, that was created in the early 1990's. It was designed to similarly entrain brainwaves with precisely timed, flickering lights. One can simply choose the settings one wants, sit in front of the computer monitor, and close one's eyes. The software then pulses the monitor so that the flickering is experienced behind one's closed eyelids. It offers a remarkably effective, seemingly effortless feeling of DEEP RELAXATION, within only a few minutes. The effect appears very similar to the experience of using actual Light & Sound Machine goggles.

This meditation enhancer was recently given new life, by an American computer programmer. It now allows the previously out-dated program to function within today's modern Windows environment. I often recommend it to my patients who want to better mange their stress.

Virtual "Light & Sound Machine" Meditation Freeware Installation Instructions

The effectiveness and ease of audio hypnotic programs can even be enhanced with the use the meditation enhancer software technology, described above. Unfortunately, almost sixty percent of those who make resolutions give up, within the first six months. Nevertheless, chances are that if you do make a resolution, you will be ten times more likely to prevail over those without the resolve.

To succeed with your resolution, however, it is vital to pair enough emotional pain to the old behavior and enough emotional pleasure with the new behavior. For example, a smoker might imagine how good it will feel to breathe easier as well as to have more energy, freedom and pride in the accomplishment..

Having a plan is also key to any behavioral change. In that regard, the Internet affords an amazing array of self-help tools. My collection of online, “Solutions to your 2008 Resolutions” offers free software and meditation downloads for managing stress, free ebooks on weight-loss, exercise and smoking cessation, and links to other select online tools: www.SimplifiedHealth.com.

FREE Hypnosis for Smoking Cessation

Imagine a disease that causes more annual premature deaths than HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides and murders combined. Imagine that this disease robs each of its sufferers of an average of seven years of life, with their final years often characterized as painfully debilitating.

The annual American health care costs of this condition reach over $50 billion. The disease is responsible for more than 7% of all deaths, throughout the world. Within about a decade, this same estimate will likely increase to nearly 18% of worldwide deaths. Although it is not contagious, an average of over 3,000 American children and non-afflicted adults, who surround themselves by the afflicted, will consequently experience disease and premature death, each year.

The devastating "disease," of course, is Nicotine Dependence. This year, the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout is scheduled for November 15th. The annual event encourages smokers to quit for a day in the hope they may quit for good. Over 80% of smokers actually admit that they do desire to be smoke-free.

Despite smoking’s horrendous health effects, a practically free, curative treatment has existed for many years. It has been demonstrated that the treatment is generally effective for more than 30% of those who embrace it. In fact, since 1992, according to New Scientist, it has been known that "Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking." Its quote was based upon a study cited within the Journal of Applied Psychology, earlier that same year. These findings appear to hold true, even in today's healthcare environment that demonstrates an overemphasis upon pharmacological approaches.

QuitForFree.com

As a Pennsylvania psychologist and certified hypnotherapist, I advocate the use of clinical hypnosis for smoking cessation, one of the least expensive and most effective approaches to becoming smoke-free. Since the American Medical Association approved the use of clinical hypnosis in the 1950's, hundreds of thousands of people have found hypnosis to be an effective way to stop smoking, lose weight, and otherwise improve their lives.

Download a FREE copy of Allen Carr's
Scandal: "This is the Book That the Government,
the Pharmaceuticals,
the Tobacco Companies, the NHS, QUIT
and ASH Don't Want You to Read"
Image and ebook hosted by allencarr.com.

According to the World Health Organization's Former Director-General, Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, "A cigarette is the only consumer product which when used as directed kills its consumer."

To learn more about the Great American Smokeout; to request a FREE sample pack of nicotine gum; and to download a FREE Hypnosis Audio Program for Smoking Cessation, visit www.greatsmokeout.org/ and www.quitforfree.com/.

Addiction's True Nature

The negative impact of abuse, which originates with the addict, slowly permeates into his or her family and ultimately throughout the community. Efforts to educate our communities, regarding these consequences, are critical in initiating positive change.

The tangible losses associated with addiction are often readily apparent. Crime and the eventual losses of health, jobs, family, friends, and money are only the manifestations of a more intangible loss, which is likely the real culprit behind abuse: loss of one’s self through the insidious and consistent detachment of one’s feelings through addiction.

Feelings serve the useful purpose of guiding one in better understanding oneself. The avoidance of feelings (particularly through addiction) robs oneself of the valuable, directional information which feelings can afford. A “gut instinct”, for example, can be viewed as a crystallization of all of one’s life experiences into a single guiding feeling. Nobody can be consciously aware of every life experience, as it may relate to a presenting concern. One can, however, benefit from one’s guiding feeling.

Addiction has the real potential to dull this and other types of valuable feelings, which can ultimately, further alienate the addict from him or herself and others, leading to confusion, poor direction, and despair. This cycle can continue to create a pattern which can lead to the more tangible aforementioned losses. Education (whether through the media, therapy, or the like) is key to breaking this pattern and changing ultimate despair into real hope for the future.

The Jellinek Curve offers a graphical representation of the insidious path of addiction and recovery: www.SimplifiedHealth.com/links.htm#jellinek

Mental Health Parity - The Equity Between Physical and Emotional Health Care Insurance Coverage

Considering the current legislative debate, it is vitally important for voters to understand the need for a fair balance between physical and emotional medical health care coverage. More than a decade ago Dr. Herbert Benson, of the Harvard Medical School, even emphasized the fact that "60 to 90 percent of [doctor-patient] visits are prompted by conditions related to stress."

We seem to live in a culture within which we are indoctrinated with the idea that medication is the answer to our health care problems. Although medications can certainly be quite beneficial, most people do not realize that many clinical studies indicate that specific meditations, for example, have the potential to lower blood pressure better than medication alone.

Counseling or psychotherapy are proven and effective treatments for a wide range of medical problems, including stress, depression, high blood pressure, insomnia, drug addiction and pain management. The unparalleled benefit of the combination of mental and physical health therapies is unquestionable. Although many insurances also offer coverage for psychotherapy, the inequality within and across coverage plans absolutely needs to be resolved.

As a licensed psychologist and certified hypnotherapist, I advocate the use of hypnosis for stress management. Additionally, "Light and Sound Machines" are relatively new, affordable devices that help users experience near effortless states of deep relaxation, within only a few minutes. In order to try this intriguing way to de-stress, I recommend the following FREE software download, from Tucows. It acquaints computer users to the relaxing effect, via one's monitor.

FREE "Virtual Light & Sound Machine" Software For Effortless Meditation:
http://www.tucows.com/preview/509052

Psychologists' Role in Overall Healthcare

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who rely upon scientific method to understand human behavior. Within a clinical setting, psychologists apply their expertise in a balanced manner, between a directive style and the recognition of the importance of allowing themselves to be more of a facilitator to help their clients help themselves. For most people, this approach allows for accurate assessment of presenting concerns and facilitation of personal growth

As humans, we do have an innate capacity toward health. Physically, for example, if we cut ourselves, we usually heal. Sometimes, however, if there is an infection, the cut will likely fester, continuing to cause problems, until the wound is cleansed. Therapy can be considered a way to help clean festering, “emotional wounds” that are contributing to present concerns. Although we are a species that is fairly resilient, therapy is a deliberate way, however, to facilitate our resiliency, in order to allow positive change to occur sooner, rather than later.

Talking with an objective other can offer a unique perspective conducive to emotional growth. When attempting to be supportive, unfortunately, family and friends can often make inappropriate comments, like: “Forget it” or “Don’t worry about it.” Usually that tactic is easier said than done. Although well-intentioned, these statements tend to serve to further alienate oneself from one’s feelings. One’s feelings (both pleasant and unpleasant) offer the useful purpose of guiding one in better understanding oneself. It is the misunderstanding or avoidance of feelings that is often a catalyst to undermining our innate process, which helps us to be resilient in the first place.

Misunderstandings about therapy have kept many from seeking timely, effective care. Similar early misunderstandings, within the medical field, for example, had existed for years. I trust that the continued acceptance and appreciation of the field of psychology will dispel any residual misunderstandings about its efficacious use and appropriateness to overall healthcare.

WELCOME!

Please feel free to use this forum as an opportunity to share ideas, related to mental health issues.
